Fluoride sodium is an organic salt and is an important source of fluoride ion in many applications.

Structure and formula: The chemical name for sodium fluoride in the simplest form is NaF. Its mololar mass is 41.99g/mol. It is an ionic compound that is simple and made up of the sodium (Na+), fluoride (F) anion. The crystal structure of sodium chloride crystals (NaCl), is very similar to that found in solid salt.

Occurrence - Sodium fluoride can be found in nature as the very rare mineral villiaumite in very small amounts.

Preparation is the most important source of sodium Fluoride. It is typically prepared by neutralizing hydrofluoric with bases such a sodium carbonate (soda Ash, Na2CO3) and sodium hydroxide(caustic soda. NaOH) or sodium bicarbonate.

HF + NaOH = NaF + Water

Physical properties: The sodium fluoride is an odorless and crystalline solid. It can range in color from white to greenish depending on its purity. Its density is 2.56g/mL. Its melting point is 993°C and its boiling point is 1,704°C. It is a hydrophobic solid that absorbs moisture from the atmosphere.

Chemical properties of sodium fluoride: It is very soluble and dissolves into the solution of sodium and fluoride. It is incombustible but not corrosive to aluminium metal. It is stable when it is heated to normal temperatures. However, when heated up to high temperatures, the toxic and corrosive gases of hydrogen Fluoride (HF) are released.

Uses. Sodium fluoride is widely employed as a fluorinating ingredient in toothpastes and water supplies. This helps to maintain your dental health. It is used in metallurgy as well as the glass industry to act as a wood preservative. Nuclear medical imaging has another application where radioactive sodiumfluoride (NaF18), is used as a radiotracer to detect various conditions.

Health effects/safety dangers: Sodium fluoride has toxic and corrosive properties. It can cause nausea, vomiting and convulsions. Inhalation can cause severe irritation in the respiratory tract. Inhaling solid NaF could cause serious irritation to the skin and eyes.
